The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
O Boticário's Privée La Collection aux Légumes takes inspiration from the produce aisle and asks: what if vegetables belonged in fine fragrance? Betterave, French for beetroot, is the answer Quentin Bisch composed for that question. The 2024 release puts an earthy, root-vegetable note at the heart of an oriental-woody structure, bridging the gap between botanical curiosity and wearable sophistication. It's the kind of name that makes you stop. Then lean in.
Beetroot doesn't appear in perfumes often. When it does, it reads as earthiness, mineral depth, that purple-root sweetness, not green herbs, not carrot orange, but something subterranean and specific. Cashmeran amplifies the softness around it, a synthetic musk that behaves like its namesake: warm, powdery, enveloping. Together they frame the beetroot without domesticating it. The base then delivers what the name promises, Bourbon vanilla absolute, Orpur-grade patchouli, and ambrette seed adding a muskiness that keeps the whole thing grounded rather than airy.
The evolution
The opening hits bright. Pink pepper crackles, mandarin peels back sweet and sharp. Thirty minutes in, the beetroot surfaces, not as a vegetable smell exactly, more like the memory of earth, of roots pulled fresh. The cashmeran is already softening the edges. By the second hour, vanilla has arrived and settled. The beetroot doesn't disappear, it deepens, becomes the mineral shadow beneath the sweetness. Patchouli anchors everything through the fourth or fifth hour, staying close to skin, intimate rather than announced. What lingers on fabric the next day: vanilla, faint, like a half-remembered warmth.
Cultural impact
Part of O Boticário's Privée La Collection aux Légumes, Betterave represents the brand's willingness to work with unusual botanical materials, in this case, a root vegetable, and translate it into something wearable. The vegetable-collection concept is playful without being ironic; the execution is sophisticated enough to stand alongside conventional fine fragrances.
