The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nejma 5 belongs to a collection of seven fragrances, each one a different daughter, each one interpreting the same Arab narrative of Nejma and Vezir. The fifth daughter arrives with a different energy than her siblings. Where others lean heavier into oriental depth, Nejma 5 opens fruity and luminous, softening into rose and neroli before the base reveals its true nature. Jean Niel structured the composition to move through distinct phases: brightness at the gate, floral elegance in the middle, and oriental warmth that settles close and stays. The story of Nejma is one of beauty and complexity, and Nejma 5 captures that, a fragrance that changes as you live inside it.
What makes Nejma 5 distinctive is the balance between its fruity opening and its oriental base. The nectarine, blackberry, and Sicilian bergamot arrive bright and juicy, but the bergamot keeps everything from tipping into sweetness, a cool, almost bitter edge that grounds the fruit. Then Bulgarian rose and Tunisian neroli soften the composition into something powdery and elegant. The base is where Nejma's house signature lives: amber, sandalwood, and oud create warmth without heaviness. The oud here is not the aggressive, barnyard kind. It's translucent. The vetiver adds a powdery earthiness that supports rather than competes. This is oriental perfumery for someone who wants depth without drama.
The evolution
The opening is all fruit, nectarine and blackberry softened by Sicilian bergamot. Bright. Approachable. The bergamot lingers longest among the top notes, keeping the sweetness honest for the first thirty minutes. Then the heart takes over: Bulgarian rose arrives slowly, its petals unfolding alongside Tunisian neroli. The floral heart is powdery, not heavy, a softness that feels like silk against skin. As time passes, the base begins to reveal itself. Amber and sandalwood warm everything up, their creamy depth wrapping around the earlier notes. The oud is the quiet undercurrent, present but not announced, lending an air of mystery without dominating. Vetiver adds a final dusty, powdery earthiness that grounds the composition and gives it a quiet sophistication. What surprises is the intimacy. Nejma 5 doesn't fill a room. It draws people in.
Cultural impact
Nejma 5 is one of seven sisters, each interpreting the same narrative in a different way. The house structures its releases deliberately, avoiding rigid schedules in favor of compositions that carry a sense of authorship. Within the niche community, Nejma is recognized for oriental depth refined by Parisian discretion, warmth worn close, not performed for the room.
