The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Gateau D'Iris arrived in 2023 from My Perfumes. Its listed notes combine iris and tonka bean with sweet fruity florals and musk, offering a balance of delicate floral character and bold detail. The composition opens with black pepper and green mandarin orange, creating a bright, gently sharp introduction. Bergamot adds another citrus accent, while pineapple introduces a juicy sweetness that keeps the fragrance from seeming overly soft. These opening notes give way to a heart built around iris, tonka bean, and the listed floral elements. Tonka bean contributes a sweet, bean-like depth, while the floral notes add softness and diffusion around the more distinctive materials. Musk appears in the base, lending a clean, soft finish to the blend.
What makes this one interesting is the tension between materials that don't usually share a room. Iris brings a cool, powdery, earthy impression, while pineapple is juicy and tropical. Amber and bourbon vanilla add dense, warm sweetness. Rather than smoothing those contrasts into something predictable, the composition lets the fruit cut across the powder. Black pepper adds a dry snap at the top, and musk in the base provides a soft counterweight without erasing the contrast. That push and pull, cool iris against warm vanilla, is the part worth paying attention to.
The evolution
The listed composition begins with green mandarin orange and black pepper. Green mandarin orange adds a sharp, zesty lift, while black pepper contributes a dry, almost savoury snap. Juniper berries introduce a cool herbal edge beneath those brighter notes, creating an opening built around citrus, spice, and herbal facets. Bergamot adds another layer of citrus, keeping the first impression lively and transparent. The heart is listed with iris and tonka bean, accompanied by sweet fruity floral notes. Iris contributes a soft powdery character, tonka bean brings rounded sweetness, and the floral elements add a polished floral dimension. Pineapple appears among these notes as well, giving the composition a brighter, more playful fruit accent. The base contains amber, bourbon vanilla, and musk.
Cultural impact
Iris has a long history as one of perfumery's most storied materials, valued for its powdery, earthy elegance and its reputation for staying subtle. Gateau D'Iris builds on that familiar material with a vivid note pairing: pineapple brings a juicy fruit accent, while black pepper adds a dry spice facet. Tonka bean contributes rounded sweetness, and the combination of iris with amber, bourbon vanilla, and musk gives the floral center a warmer frame. It's a fragrance for anyone drawn to iris with extra contrast, pairing its cool powderiness with fruit, spice, and vanilla rather than presenting iris in a polished, single-note form.
