The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Knight's Tour is a 2026 release from Mind Games, the niche house whose collection draws its naming conventions directly from the game of chess. The Knight's Tour is one of the most elegant sequences in the game: the knight covers every square on the board in a single uninterrupted path. No repetition. No wasted step. The brand brought in perfumer Jordi Fernández to compose something equally deliberate, a woody aromatic extrait that moves through spice, florals, and earth with the same strategic logic. Fernández approached the build like a sequence of calculated exchanges, each note placed where it needs to land, none arriving early or lingering past its purpose.
Fernández built the composition around a tension between warmth and precision. The opening loads up on citron, nutmeg, red ginger, and saffron, four materials that could easily overwhelm each other. Instead, they're arranged so the citron stays sharp, the saffron stays golden, and the nutmeg grounds both. The cedarwood and gardenia in the middle act as a pivot point, woody and creamy at once. Benzoin, cashmeran, oakmoss, and vetiver do the heavy lifting underneath, and the combination gives the drydown a character that sets it apart from standard woody aromatics.
The evolution
The opening is a bright, sharp agreement between citron and the citrus oils that frame it, with nutmeg and red ginger warming up just behind them. Saffron threads through everything, not loud but unmistakable, the way gold thread catches light in fabric. As the initial brightness softens, the heart opens: cedarwood arrives with a dry, structural quality, lavender cuts in with that cool aromatic clarity, and gardenia adds an unexpected creaminess that softens the whole thing. The lavender and cedar work as a kind of hinge, one leaning green and herbal, the other woody and architectural, and together they bridge the spicy top from the resinous base. Eventually, the florals recede and the base takes over completely. Benzoin brings a warm resinous sweetness, cashmeran adds that smooth, slightly woody-musky texture, and oakmoss grounds the composition with something green and earthy.
Cultural impact
Knight's Tour lands in 2026 as Mind Games continues its chess-inspired lineup, a series that frames fragrance as strategic decision-making. The brand has positioned each release as a counterpart to a piece on the board, and this extrait, composed by Jordi Fernández, fits the knight's L-shaped maneuver: a composition that moves sideways to advance. The woody aromatic profile with its saffron-cedar spine gives it a clear identity within the brand's catalog, and it sits comfortably alongside other Mind Games releases like Castling, Kingside, Gambit, and Checkmate, each of which carries its own thematic weight.
