The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Amber+Smoke arrived in 2022 from perfumer Ilias Ermenidis. The name is the concept, but the execution goes beyond those two materials. Ermenidis built outward from the amber-smoke pairing, adding saffron's bright edge at the top, jasmine's white floral lift in the heart, and a base of sugar and oakmoss to keep the smoke from turning sharp. Saffron brings a spice that sits between medicinal and sweet, almost metallic in certain lights. Jasmine provides lush, tropical warmth that lifts the composition away from heaviness. The amber base anchors everything with resinous depth, while the sugar softens and the oakmoss adds an earthy, slightly mossy undertone that grounds the blend. The effect is a single mood, golden hour, the moment before the room darkens, translated into liquid form.
What makes the structure work is the way the smoke behaves. Pipe tobacco smoke sits in both the heart and the base, which means it doesn't arrive and leave, it lingers, recalibrating as the other materials shift around it. When the saffron and citrus open, the smoke is already there, cool and backing the brightness. When the amber and jasmine take over, the smoke deepens, becomes sugared rather than ashy. The sugar in the base doesn't read as sweetness so much as roundness, it softens the oakmoss, keeps the drydown from going dry. It's a composition that could have gone sharp in a dozen places. It doesn't.
The evolution
The opening is the sharpest part. Saffron and lemon zest arrive together, citrusy and slightly metallic, that word the reviewers use, electric, fits. Orange blossom softens it slightly, but the top is brightness without apology. There's a warmth building underneath, the amber already making its presence felt even as the citrus dominates. Then the jasmine enters. Not gradually. It announces itself, and suddenly the composition shifts from sharp to lush. The smoke is still there underneath, but it's been pushed back, doing quiet work. This phase, amber, jasmine, tobacco smoke, is the heart of the wear. The floral and smoky elements dance together, neither one overwhelming the other. The drydown is where it gets interesting. The sugar and oakmoss come forward, and the smoke settles into something almost resinous. Pine tree adds a faint green edge that keeps the sweetness from going flat.
Cultural impact
Amber+Smoke presents a warm, smoky-sweet composition that balances depth with approachability. The composition moves through distinct phases, beginning with bright citrus and spice, transitioning into lush floral territory, and settling into a rich, resinous base. The jasmine and amber create a compelling tension throughout, while the smoky undertones add mystery without overwhelming. This is a fragrance that invites exploration, rewarding attention to its layered construction and the way its notes evolve over time.
