The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fenicia takes its name from the ancient world that gave us trade routes, perfumed oils, and the first great merchants. The 2015 release was part of the Murano Exclusive collection, reflecting a heritage of shipping lanes and bazaars that once connected East and West. The bottle itself reflects this lineage, with colors that evoke a lagoon city that has always looked eastward. The deep blue and gold palette captures the spirit of Mediterranean trade, where goods and ideas flowed between distant ports, and where the language of commerce was once spoken in the spice-laden air of crowded harbors.
What makes Fenicia interesting is the structure. Most oriental-spicy fragrances open bold and stay bold. This one shifts gears mid-sequence. After the initial citrus burst, something unusual happens: it creates space. The warm spices don't rush in to fill it. Rose arrives first, quiet and sweet, before nutmeg and clove establish themselves. By the time sandalwood and benzoin settle into the base, the composition has already told a story with several chapters.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and tart. Calabrian lemon dominates, sharp enough to cut through, with a faintly balsamic edge that suggests resin without heaviness. Thirty minutes in, the citrus recedes and the warm spices assert themselves, nutmeg first, then clove, then cinnamon creeping in at the edges. The rose is the quiet connector here, sweetening the heat just enough to keep it from feeling medicinal. By the third hour, the base begins its slow reveal: sandalwood and patchouli providing a woody foundation, benzoin and tonka bean softening everything into a warm amber that clings to the skin. The saffron appears in small doses, adding a subtle metallic edge that prevents the drydown from becoming predictable. The fragrance remains close to the skin, intimate in its presence but persistent, a warm resinous presence that lingers quietly.
Cultural impact
Since its 2015 launch, Fenicia has attracted wearers looking for an oriental-spicy that doesn't follow the obvious template. The citrus opening provides something familiar, a point of recognition, before the warm spice and resinous heart reveals its true character. Community reception emphasizes the kind of compliments that come from people who noticed but didn't expect to, and the way the fragrance evolves on skin keeps wearers returning to discover new facets.
