The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Patricia de Nicolaï created Un Coeur en Mai for MDCI Parfums in 2009, naming it after the most romantic month on the calendar. The title, 'A Heart in May', captures something specific: the tender optimism of spring, when the world softens and anything feels possible. Nicolaï built the fragrance around that feeling of anticipation, layering green freshness against warm florals to create a scent that feels both invigorating and intimate. It was her vision for what a spring fragrance should be, not a generic floral, but something with structure and quiet depth.
The unusual pairing of galbanum with melon and blackcurrant gives Un Coeur en Mai an unexpected freshness, green sharpness meets fruit sweetness in a way that feels natural, like morning light through a garden. The Bulgarian rose and Moroccan mimosa heart adds romantic depth without tipping into sweetness. The musk and woody base grounds everything, making the drydown feel intimate rather than ephemeral. Nicolaï's classical training shows in the architecture: every layer has a reason to be there.
The evolution
The opening hits green and immediate, galbanum leads with a sharp, dewy intensity. Blackcurrant arrives quickly, its tart fruitiness cutting through the green. Melon adds a subtle sweetness underneath. The bergamot and petigrain give the top a citrusy backdrop without dominating. Within fifteen minutes, the heart begins to emerge. Bulgarian rose and Moroccan mimosa create a powdery floral presence that dominates the next few hours. Coriander and black pepper add a faint spice, while the geranium keeps everything grounded with a green, slightly citrusy nuance. The drydown is where this fragrance lives longest, musk and woods settling into something intimate, close to the skin, and lasting 6-8 hours on most skin types.
Cultural impact
Un Cœur en Mai occupies a specific niche in the spring fragrance landscape, for those who want complexity over crowd-pleasing sweetness. The galbanum opening and powdery rose drydown create a distinctive profile that attracts collectors who appreciate its quiet depth. It's not a fragrance that shouts, but one that rewards attention.
