Why it exists.
The beginning
The brief was simple: a leathery scent inspired by falconers' gloves. But Aurélien Guichard doesn't do simple. He went looking for leather that felt true, not the dressed-and-polished kind, but leather that had been worked. He found it in Finnish birch tar, a vegetal leather note with a smoky, almost mineral darkness that no synthetic could replicate. To amplify that darkness without losing it, he added saffron at the top, metallic, electric, the kind of opening that doesn't ask. The result is a fragrance built around one idea: what leather actually smells like when it's alive.
Finnish birch tar isn't a leather accord. It's the real thing, distilled from the bark of Betula pendula, it carries the dry, smoky character of actual tanned leather, something most fragrance houses approximate with synthetic recreations. Matiere Premiere uses it as the hero ingredient, and the choice shows. The saffron in the opening isn't decoration, it's contrast. It adds a metallic sharpness that makes the birch tar feel more intense, more present. The labdanum underneath keeps the whole thing warm enough to wear, not just admire. The base of oud and benzoin then does what good bases do: it holds.
The evolution
Saffron hits first. Not gently, sharp, almost medicinal, with that distinctive metallic thread that saffron brings to any composition. Labdanum softens the edges immediately, but only just. The real show starts around the thirty-minute mark when Finnish birch tar takes over. This is where the fragrance earns its name. The smoke isn't atmospheric, it's structural. It builds the leather rather than describing it, replacing any sweetness with something dry, dark, almost petroleum-tinged. That vegetal quality lingers through the mid-life, pulling the composition toward earth and bark rather than comfort. By hour three, oud begins its slow arrival, animalic, warm, the sweet resinous undercurrent of benzoin emerging alongside it. The leather doesn't disappear. It settles. The final drydown is warm amber and faint smoke on skin, something that clings to fabric overnight. On some skin, this lasts into the next day, the faint ghost of burned leather on a collar, a sleeve, a memory.

Leather has deep roots in human culture, used across millennia for tools, clothing, and symbols of status. In perfumery, leather accords became synonymous with bold masculinity during the 20th century, associations tied to iconography from tobacco shops to old Hollywood. Contemporary fragrance has challenged those norms entirely. Modern leather fragrances like this one are worn by people of all genders who appreciate their complexity. The use of materials like saffron and labdanum pushes leather away from simple smoky imitation toward something more nuanced, connecting fragrance culture to broader shifts in how we think about traditionally coded scent categories.
