The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Khalid arrived in 2023 as part of the Niche Emarati collection, and the name says everything. Emarati means Emirati. This is a fragrance that wears its regional identity openly, a statement of ownership over local craft and expertise. Where many houses borrow from Arabian perfumery traditions, Lattafa built theirs from it. The leather and saffron combination is deliberate: a nod to traditional materials, executed with the boldness the collection demands. Birch and cade oil add complexity that separates this from simpler leather fragrances, depth that requires intention to appreciate.
The materials here are what require attention. Birch brings a smoky, slightly medicinal quality. Cade oil, derived from juniper, amplifies the smoky dimension and adds a bitter, resinous edge that makes the leather feel three-dimensional rather than flat. Then there's the double leather stacking, top and base, which creates continuity across the pyramid. It's not accidental. It anchors the entire structure so the smoky heart and resinous drydown have something to hold onto.
The evolution
The first spray hits like someone opening a car door in cool air, immediate, confident, slightly startling. Leather announces itself with saffron riding just underneath, bright enough to prevent the opening from becoming heavy. Labdanum adds a sticky, resinous quality that makes the top feel almost physical. Within twenty minutes, the heart arrives. Birch and cade oil introduce smoke, not the sweet, vanillic smoke of whisky barrels but something drier, more austere. The patchouli keeps it grounded, earthy, with a faint green edge that stops the smoky dimension from becoming one-note. The base takes over around the third hour. Leather returns, but now it has oud beneath it, deep, dark, with that characteristic animalic warmth. Benzoin and tolu balsam wrap around the structure, sticky and sweet, like resin warming on skin. This is where Khalid earns its reputation for longevity.
Cultural impact
Khalid occupies a specific space in the leather fragrance category, one that combines intensity with accessibility. The Emirati identity adds another dimension, grounding the scent in a tradition of craft that prioritizes bold, unapologetic presence. There's an honesty to how it projects, a directness that doesn't require explanation or context. The strong sillage ensures it announces itself before conversation begins. This is a fragrance that speaks first and lets its character do the introducing.
