The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Aurélien Guichard built Metal Lavender around a contradiction: two lavenders, set against each other to see what survives. The main ingredient is organic Lavandin Essence from Grasse, the kind of raw, almost agricultural lavender that carries its own mentholated bite straight from the field. Guichard surrounded it with cashmeran, a molecule that reads as soft metal against skin, and let the musk do the anchoring. The composition treats lavender as a structural material, not a floral accent, something precise, something meant to last, something that catches the light differently depending on the hour. The lavandin brings the green, camphorated snap. The lavender absolute underneath rounds the composition, lending a creamy depth that keeps the cashmeran from drifting into pure abstraction.
Guichard uses both lavandin and lavender absolute, and the choice matters. The lavandin brings the mentholated, almost camphor edge that reads as cold metal on first spray. The lavender absolute softens it, rounds the corners, gives the composition a creamy undertone that prevents the cashmeran from going purely synthetic. The cashmeran itself is a molecule worth knowing. In Metal Lavender, it acts as the hinge between the two lavenders and the musk beneath them, a bridge that translates cold into warm, metal into suede, surface into skin.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are where this fragrance earns its name. Lavandin hits sharp, almost mentholated, reading as cold metal rather than a field of flowers. There's a clean, almost mineral tension that makes the first hour feel deliberate, like wearing something architectural. Then the cashmeran starts to assert. The cold softens. The lavender absolute underneath comes forward, rounding the edges, and the musk begins its slow work of turning everything skin-warm. By the third hour, the composition has settled into a different character entirely, something quieter, closer to the body, where the cashmeran reads as soft suede rather than chrome. The lavender doesn't disappear. It deepens, going from bright to golden, a thread of herbal warmth that anchors the later phases. The drydown has above-average longevity, and the way the notes rearrange themselves over time is part of the appeal.
Cultural impact
Metal Lavender sits in a growing current of lavender-focused niche work, compositions that treat the material as more than a supporting note in a fougère or aromatic structure. The pairing of lavandin with lavender absolute, both pushed hard and balanced against cashmeran, gives the fragrance a colder, more constructed character than typical lavender releases. Within Matière Premiere's own catalogue, the overdose approach is consistent with how the house handles its other single-material compositions, and Metal Lavender extends that logic into territory that feels closer to mineral than floral.
