The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mark Buxton spent three decades composing for luxury houses before turning toward something more personal. His Paris-based line operates outside the usual fragrance market, small collection, no loud marketing, just compositions that reward close wear. Emotional Drop arrived in 2021 as an exercise in contrast: the elegant beauty of flowers against something with more edge. Gooseberry and violet leaves bring a green-fruity snap that refuses to be polite. Orris and rose bring the refinement. The tension between them is the point. Buxton describes fragrance as a personal diary, a scent-bound memory you can open and revisit. Emotional Drop is that philosophy made concrete, a fragrance that asks something of the wearer, that reveals itself over time rather than announcing itself on entry.
The key to Emotional Drop is the contrast between the opening and the heart. Gooseberry is unusual as a top note, tart, green, slightly sour in a way that catches attention immediately. Violet leaf absolute adds a dewy, slightly leafy quality that feels almost ozonic. Neroli brings clean, bright floral. Together they create an opening that is sharp, green, and alive. But the heart is where this fragrance distinguishes itself. Blackcurrant blossom brings a darker, more complex fruitiness than the usual berry notes. Orris root, the same material that gives iris its powdery elegance, adds sophistication and a slightly floral, woody character.
The evolution
The opening is immediate. Gooseberry arrives bright and tart, violet leaf absolute adding a dewy green quality that feels ozonic, almost mineral. Neroli smooths the edges just enough to keep it from being abrasive. This phase lasts about thirty minutes before the hand-off begins. The heart takes over gradually. Blackcurrant blossom deepens the green-fruity character into something richer, more complex. Orris root introduces powdery elegance that softens the tartness without eliminating it. Rose oil adds delicate floral sweetness in the background. The transition is seamless, no harsh shift, just a slow yielding from sharp to refined. The drydown reveals the full woody character. Vetiver brings earthy, slightly smoky depth. Fir balsam adds a subtle resinous quality that feels clean and green without being coniferous. Sandalwood provides warmth and creaminess that lingers. This phase lasts 8-10 hours on most skin types. The morning after, there is still something warm and woody close to the skin, vetiver and sandalwood holding on.
Cultural impact
Emotional Drop is a niche fragrance for someone who wants something outside the usual fruity-floral territory. The unusual pairing of gooseberry and violet leaf with orris and rose creates a contrast that rewards attention. It performs as a personal scent, moderate sillage, long drydown, complexity that reveals itself over time rather than announcing itself on entry. This is not a fragrance for those who want to be noticed across a room. It is for those who want to be interesting up close.
