The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Speciale is M. Micallef's statement move, taking the house's already beloved Ylang in Gold and rehousing it in crystal. Released in 2022, this collector's edition arrives for those who don't just wear a fragrance but display it. Same composition as the original, but the flacon tells you something different. This is for people who understood the assignment the first time and want to double down.
Ylang-ylang is the star here, and it knows it. This tropical bloom brings a heady, almost intoxicating sweetness that coconut cream amplifies rather than softens. The sandalwood base keeps everything grounded, warm, smooth, and just slightly powdery at the edges. It's a composition that could easily tip into excess but walks the line instead, finding the exact point where rich becomes luxurious rather than overwhelming.
The evolution
The opening is citrus-bright and clean, geranium lifts the citruses into something almost green before the florals arrive. Then the ylang-ylang blooms, slow and warm, taking its time. Coconut cream wraps around it, sweet and plush. The drydown is vanilla and wood, sandalwood's warmth meeting a quiet powder that settles close and stays. On fabric, it lingers into the next day, faint and warm like memory.
Cultural impact
The Speciale edition sits comfortably within the niche collector trend, fragrance as both scent and spectacle. Ylang In Gold has spawned multiple flankers and special editions, suggesting the formula hit something real. The crystal bottle signals intent: this is for people who want their fragrance shelf to read like a curated gallery.
