The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ponche draws its name from ponche, the festive Mexican Christmas punch shared among family and friends during holiday celebrations. Where most fragrance houses look to European gardens or Arabian oud for inspiration, Lush went to the punch bowl. The fragrance translates that spirit of warmth, generosity, and celebration into something wearable. In-house perfumers working with Lush's ethically-sourced ingredients built this around fruit, herbs, and a deliberate splash of tequila, capturing the energy of a gathering where everyone brings something unexpected to the table.
What makes Ponche unusual is the collision of fruity sweetness and herbal intensity. Buchu, an aromatic South African plant with a camphor-mint character, brings an unexpected medicinal edge to what might otherwise read as a straightforward fruit note. Davana and artemisia amplify this herbal direction, creating a heart that leans green and aromatic rather than soft and floral. The tequila note anchors the composition with warmth, but it's the tension between sweet fruit and herbal sharpness that defines this fragrance's character.
The evolution
The opening arrives in tropical color: sun-ripe fruits and bright petitgrain citrus. Plum adds weight. Then davana and artemisia enter with their herbal, slightly camphorated presence, shifting the trajectory. Red berries and plum carry the heart, but the herbal note doesn't fully retreat. It lingers alongside the fruit like a guest who showed up in the wrong room and decided to stay. Tequila threads warmth through the middle. In the drydown, the sweetness recedes to quiet fruitiness and residual herbal warmth. The boozy note fades last, barely perceptible but present. Longevity holds for several hours before becoming intimate and close.
Cultural impact
Ponche occupies a specific space in Lush's fragrance lineup: celebratory and approachable, yet with an unusual aromatic complexity that rewards attention. The herbal-buchu note creates a divide that keeps conversation alive. For those drawn to Lush's more unconventional fragrances, Ponche offers a fruity gateway into the brand's bolder aromatic territory.
