The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mark Constantine created 1000 Kisses in 2011 as a tribute to enduring love, his own marriage translated into liquid form. The apricot-amber pairing became the vehicle, osmanthus bringing its delicate floral fruit, resins providing the weight that keeps everything grounded. The fragrance opens with mandarin's citrus brightness softened immediately by osmanthus, its honeyed sweetness tempering the sharp opening notes. Apricot emerges as a warm, luminous quality, neither sharp nor cloying, settling into the skin like late afternoon light. Resinous elements anchor the composition from the heart onward, preventing sweetness from floating away, keeping the scent intimate and close.
Osmanthus is the quiet ace here. This tiny osmanthus flower doesn't shout, it whispers apricot, honey, suede into compositions that don't know what hit them. Combined with mandarin's bright citrus top and the balsamic depth of myrrh and labdanum, the structure forms a soft arch: bright opening, warm middle, resinous close. The caraway adds a faint anise-like edge that prevents the whole thing from sliding into pure sweetness. It's the kind of layered sweetness that rewards attention.
The evolution
The opening hits first, mandarin's citrus brightness cut with osmanthus sweetness. The apricot accord emerges as a gentle bloom on the skin, a warm and luminous quality that doesn't demand attention. Then the resinous middle arrives: myrrh and labdanum settling in alongside geranium's faint green herbal lift. The transition isn't dramatic, more a slow hand-off, the citrus fading as amber takes hold. The drydown settles into warmth and intimacy, myrrh and the apricot accord lingering together, close to the skin, refusing to fully disappear. The osmanthus continues to weave through the composition, its fruity-floral character adding depth to the amber foundation. Resinous notes keep everything grounded, preventing the sweetness from becoming ephemeral, creating instead a lasting impression of warmth and softness on the skin.
Cultural impact
Within Lush's fragrance library, 1000 Kisses occupies a particular space, a scent built for intimacy rather than announcement. The apricot-amber combination creates warmth without projection, sweetness without sharpness. The osmanthus adds a sophisticated floral dimension that elevates the fruit notes beyond simple sweetness. Those who gravitate toward this fragrance tend to appreciate its quiet confidence, the way it rewards close attention rather than announcing itself across a room. The combination of resinous warmth and delicate florals makes it suited for close conversation and personal enjoyment rather than theatrical presence.
