The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Numen takes its name from the Latin word for a divine presence, something powerful and undefined, beyond the gods themselves. The concept invited exploration into how something so abstract could translate into scent. What emerged was a composition built on contrast, cool green against warm amber, the herbal against the resinous. The fragrance opens with crisp, clean aromatics that establish its green character. As it develops, the herbal qualities interweave with deeper resinous notes, creating a layered experience. The amber foundation adds warmth without heaviness, grounding the composition in something substantial. The herbal and resinous elements do not fight for dominance but instead coexist, each note finding its place within the whole.
Hemp appears in this composition as an aromatic material with a slightly resinous character alongside a green quality that pairs with jasmine. Jasmine adds creaminess to the blend. Cedar and vetiver bring wood and earth notes without adding heaviness. The base includes incense as a material, offering something resinous and warm rather than smoke-and-leather. The result is a fragrance where opposing forces remain suspended rather than resolved, which requires more skill than simple harmony. The combination creates something neither completely cool nor warm, neither purely green nor sweet.
The evolution
The opening arrives with citrus brightness. Bergamot and mandarin create a sharp, energetic character before black pepper arrives to add warmth underneath. The bergamot does not linger indefinitely, eventually yielding to the heart of the fragrance. Hemp appears with a green and aromatic quality alongside jasmine, which adds creaminess. Cedar and vetiver provide wood and earth, keeping the composition grounded. As the scent settles, incense begins to emerge, something resinous and warm rather than smoke. The drydown reduces the fragrance to its essentials: amber, white musk, tonka bean, and that lingering incense. The tonka bean contributes sweetness while the white musk keeps the scent close. The composition moves from its initial brightness through a complex heart into a warm, lingering finish.
Cultural impact
Numen occupies a particular space among fragrance compositions. The amber-musk structure aligns with other serious works without competing with them directly. The collection attracts those drawn to fragrance as an artistic practice rather than a consumer product. Lú builds its identity through the classical references that ground each scent. The brand channels mythological and classical traditions as its creative foundation, treating ancient archetypes as the source material for fragrance.
