The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alpha 1977 lives inside LabSolue's Aqua Adornationis collection, a line built around raw, elemental sensations. The name nods to 1977, but the scent reaches for what numbers can't hold: the first touch of skin, the heat before a word lands. Sophie Labbé composed it as a study in restraint, three movements and almost nothing else. Aldehydes, ambergris, musk at the center. Labdanum and ambrette beneath. No floral distraction, no citrus opening salvo. Just the architecture of closeness itself. The official line calls it inspired by the sensual feel of raw nature and the simplicity of stories that begin. That tracks. This is the scent equivalent of a sentence left unfinished, waiting for someone else to complete it.
What makes Alpha 1977 interesting is what it leaves out. No bergamot to charm you, no fruit to seduce. Labbé starts the composition mid-conversation, as if you've walked in after the pleasantries are done. The aldehydes do double duty here, opening the door and furnishing the room at the same time, with that prickly, slightly metallic lift that makes the air around you feel brighter without ever announcing itself outright.
The evolution
The first hour is all aldehyde, that cold, bright, almost metallic flash that makes you think of freshly struck silver or a bathroom mirror in winter. It reads clean, almost soapy. Don't be fooled. Underneath, the ambergris is already pooling, warm and slightly saline, like breath on cold glass. By hour two, the musk arrives in full. Not white musk, not the cotton-fresh kind, but something denser and more animal-adjacent, the kind that makes a coat collar smell interesting when you put it on the next morning. The ambrette blooms alongside it, soft and almost powdery, giving the whole composition a skin-like warmth that feels less like perfume and more like a second layer. The labdanum takes the longest to surface, resinous and faintly sweet, arriving around hour three like someone finally saying the thing they've been thinking. By hour five, what's left is labdanum and ambrette on your pulse points, warm and close and completely yours. On fabric, especially wool or cashmere, it lingers into the next day, faint but unmistakable.
Cultural impact
Alpha 1977 sits in an unusual place among contemporary releases. The musk-amber-aldehyde combination draws on a tradition of compositions that built their warmth around ambrette and labdanum, and LabSolue's approach to it keeps the focus squarely on how those materials interact on skin rather than on dressing them up with sweeter or more crowd-pleasing additions. It wears differently across the day, opening with a bright aldehyde lift that softens quickly into a skin-close warmth, then settling into a drydown where the labdanum and ambrette do most of the talking.
