Empire Empress arrived in 2024 from Khadlaj Perfumes, a fragrance house with a growing catalog of compositions that span oriental and Western influences. Bergamot and pink pepper open with a bright, aromatic snap, while oud, white amber, and leather pull the structure toward something deeper and more resinous. The name leans regal, but the juice underneath reads less throne-room than well-dressed confidence. It's spicy, woody, and leathery without drifting into the dense sweetness that often dominates oud compositions. There's a clarity here that lets each note do its own work rather than burying them under syrupy amber or heavy rose.
What's interesting here is the restraint around the oud. Rather than pushing it toward the barnyard extremes or burying it under dense florals, Empire Empress threads a quieter middle path. The davana brings a fruity, boozy warmth that softens the oud's sharper edges, lending a fermented sweetness that reads closer to aged spirits than to fresh fruit.
