The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Encens Lumière began with a question from perfumer Karine Dubreuil-Sereni: what does a mysterious Japanese teahouse smell like? Smoke from burning incense, yes, but also the silk of kimonos, the worn leather of a seat. The perfumer pursued this vision through her raw materials, refining the balance until it felt true. Released in 2023, it sits in the Memori collection as a quiet, contemplative fragrance. The composition draws on French expertise to evoke an atmosphere that feels unmistakably rooted in Japanese tradition. Each element serves the central image, building a scent that carries the memory of a place without ever having visited it.
Incense is the pillar here, and the perfumer chose it deliberately. Incense brings the smoke, but it is the interplay with freesia that makes this unusual. Freesia survives alongside it rather than being overwhelmed. The saffron blossom adds a warm spice that prevents the whole thing from going dark or heavy. It is a composition where the notes hold their ground, each one present and contributing to the whole. The result is oriental without being heavy, smoky without being aggressive.
The evolution
Encens Lumière opens with a brief, bright spike, the saffron blossom announcing itself before the smoke settles in. Within minutes, the incense takes over, but it carries the freesia with it rather than crushing it. The floral does not disappear; it floats just beneath the surface like something you are always almost catching. The drydown is where it earns its name. The smoke deepens, almost resinous, and what lingers on skin is warm amber and something leather-like, the worn leather from the teahouse finally revealed. On some skin, this moves faster. On others, the freesia hangs around longer than expected. Either way, the drydown is intimate. Close. The kind of scent someone notices only when they are already leaning in. It has a longevity rating of 6.1, which means it stays close to the skin for hours without ever demanding attention.
Cultural impact
Encens Lumière offers something different within the incense category. The composition keeps its freesia intact, allowing the floral to remain present alongside the smoke rather than being buried by it. This restraint gives the fragrance a lightness that makes it approachable without sacrificing depth. The teahouse atmosphere comes through in the balance between smoke and florals, evoking a quiet, contemplative space. It is the kind of fragrance that invites discovery rather than making a bold statement, finding its audience among those who appreciate nuance over intensity.
