The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Kenneth Cole introduced Energy in 2018 as part of a layering system, three flankers designed to be combined with the brand's existing For Him and For Her fragrances. The concept was simple: let wearers adjust their scent based on mood. Energy, Serenity, and Intensity each brought something different to the originals. Energy's job was to inject brightness and liveliness, a fragrance that could stand alone or amplify the citrus and floral dimensions of the base scents.
The note structure reflects deliberate layering design. The white floral heart, night-blooming jasmine and tuberose absolute, works as a single accord rather than competing layers. Neither note overpowers the other. Tuberose brings its signature creamy, slightly narcotic sweetness. Night-blooming jasmine contributes a greener, more nocturnal character with a whisper of indole that surfaces differently on each wearer. Together, they form something that reads as one lush, cohesive presence, not two ingredients competing for attention. The base of musk, sandalwood, and vetiver keeps the florals from floating away. It's structured enough to layer without disappearing underneath whatever it's paired with.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately with citrus clarity. Neroli and orange blossom arrive together, that bright, slightly soapy freshness that reads as clean laundry on a windowsill. Magnolia follows more quietly, adding a powdery sweetness that softens the citrus edge without competing with it. As the initial brightness settles, the florals take their position in a slow rotation of who gets the spotlight. The heart introduces night-blooming jasmine and tuberose, and this is where the fragrance earns its name. There's an intoxicating, almost dizzying quality to this phase, lush, heady, but never heavy. The sandalwood begins to surface, tempering the sweetness with something creamier. The florals have started their slow exit, fading to make room for the base. Musk, sandalwood, and vetiver arrive in full force, creating an intimate closeness that settles into the skin like a second layer.
Cultural impact
Energy occupies a specific niche in the Kenneth Cole portfolio, a fragrance designed not to replace but to layer. It was conceived as part of a system: pair it with For Him for a sporty twist, with For Her for luminous dynamism, or wear it alone for clean, uncomplicated presence. Energy's role is to refresh and amplify rather than dominate, a supporting player that can also carry the spotlight. The layering concept treats fragrance as a customizable experience, letting wearers build their own scent profile by combining different Kenneth Cole fragrances.
