The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Reaction arrived in 2004 from Frank Voelkl, the Symrise perfumer behind some of the era's cleanest modern scents. The brief was simple: freshness with unexpected sweetness. Voelkl reached for watermelon, a note not commonly used as a lead in contemporary fragrances, and built the composition around its wet, bright character. The result felt immediate, with a cool, juicy quality that opens bright and stays close to the skin throughout the wear.
The structure is built on contrast: juicy melon and watermelon against tart citrus, green apple, and lime. Lily of the valley adds a soft floral element that bridges the gap between the bright top and the woody base, while patchouli grounds the sweetness without sharpening it. Sandalwood and musk finish clean. The pyramid isn't dramatic. It's cohesive, the kind of architecture that wears well because nothing ever fights for attention. The overall effect is a fragrance that balances fruit brightness with deeper woody undertones, creating a composed and pleasant scent experience.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately, melon and watermelon hitting cold and wet. Green apple and citrus arrive to temper the sweetness, keeping it from becoming candy. Then lily of the valley appears, a soft layer that bridges the gap between fruit and base. As the top notes settle, patchouli and musk gradually take over, warming the composition into something woodier, closer to skin. The drydown is quiet. Clean. The fragrance offers moderate longevity on most skin types, becoming intimate by the end, a faint trace lingering as the hours pass.
Cultural impact
Reaction arrived in 2004, a period when many fragrances were exploring fresh, clean scent profiles. The watermelon note gives this fragrance a distinct fruity character that stands apart from more traditional fresh scent families. Wearers who remember it often describe it as a fragrance suited to warm weather, with a bright, approachable quality that feels casual and easy to wear. It's the kind of scent people reach for when they want to smell good without thinking about it.
