The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Next Girlfriend arrived in 2014 as the sequel to Girlfriend (2012), the second chapter in Justin Bieber's fragrance line. Where Girlfriend was about flirtation, this one leans into what's next, the confidence after the first crush, the version of you that already knows what she wants. The bottle designer Lance McGregor gave it a fruit-forward opening because fruit reads as energy, movement, forward motion. This isn't the nervous first-date scent. It's the morning-after, still-in-his-shirt scent. Marketed by Elizabeth Arden, the composition delivers a sweetness that arrives fast and stays comfortable on the skin. The pineapple note cuts through with bright acidity while peach softens the edges and raspberry sweetens underneath.
Almond blossom and sandalwood beneath all that pineapple and raspberry do real work in Next Girlfriend. Without them, the opening would float off into candy territory and never come back. The accord order matters: fruit built on florals, florals cooled by freesia and lily of the valley, everything warmed by a vanilla-almond finish. The freesia brings a dewy coolness that keeps the fruit from feeling like a cocktail, and the lily of the valley adds a transparent green lift that breathes through the sweetness.
The evolution
First ten minutes, it's nearly all fruit. Blood orange and pineapple arrive together, sharp and juicy, with peach rounding the edges before raspberry adds a berry sweetness underneath. The orange gives it a citrus zest that prickles at the nostrils, while the pineapple adds a tropical tartness that keeps the sweetness in check. Peach melts the edges between them so nothing reads as sharp or synthetic. The florals, freesia and lily of the valley, take over around the 30-minute mark, softening the fruit without killing it. The scent becomes less about refreshment and more about skin. By hour two, almond blossom and sandalwood settle in and the vanilla shows up not as a cupcake but as a low hum of warmth. The almond blossom carries a soft marzipan facet that pulls the fruit toward cream, and the sandalwood adds a velvety woodiness that feels like cashmere against the pulse points.
Cultural impact
Next Girlfriend wears like a sunlit pop hook built for warm afternoons, Saturday errands, and the first days of spring when you want something cheerful without trying too hard. The pineapple and raspberry opening reads instantly, the kind of fruity sweetness that registers as fun and light rather than mature or sultry. It suits brunches, beach days, picnics, and any casual setting where you want to smell fresh and approachable without filling the room. The vanilla and almond blossom drydown keeps it from feeling like a one-note candy scent, giving it enough softness to carry into evening hours on warm skin.
