The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jil Sander has always built fragrance the way it cuts a collar, one decisive line, nothing wasted. Shiso arrives in 2026 as part of the brand's Olfactory Series 1, a new chapter from the house translating its design sensibility into scent. The brief was green, sharp, alive, something that smells like a handful of herbs crushed between cold fingers. Perfumer Julie Massé took that brief and delivered a composition built from aldehydes, Australian sandalwood, juniper berry CO2, and lime. Nothing layered for complexity's sake. Each ingredient carries its own weight and stays in its lane. It's a study in restraint executed by someone who trusts the raw materials to do the speaking.
Shiso runs on tension, not accumulation. Aldehydes deliver the cold, metallic sparkle, that almost-soapy brightness that lifts everything above room temperature. Lime pulls double duty, juicy at first, then bitter and zesty as it dries down. Juniper berry CO2 extraction brings its own character to the formula, a fresher, greener resinous quality that distinguishes it from other distillation methods. Australian sandalwood anchors the base with warmth, the one element that keeps the composition grounded rather than floating off into pure effervescence.
The evolution
The opening feels almost aggressive. Aldehydes hit bright and sharp, and the lime rides right behind, all zest and tart edge. There's no easing you in. Juniper surfaces quickly, resinous and slightly bitter, pushing the composition toward something herbal rather than clean. As the aldehyde sparkle softens, it recedes into a supporting role, letting juniper and lime share the foreground while Australian sandalwood begins its quiet climb. The drydown is where the composition finally exhales. Sandalwood's warmth takes over, but it never goes soft or sweet. The green notes, particularly juniper, stay present like a memory of the opening, keeping the base from drifting into anything resembling a typical woody fragrance. What remains on skin is a faint green-woody whisper, dry, slightly herbal, holding its shape long after the brighter notes have faded.
Cultural impact
Shiso arrives in 2026 as part of Jil Sander's Olfactory Series 1, a chapter that introduces new scent compositions from the house. The fragrance reflects the brand's instinct for clarity, built around a green-spicy character that draws on aldehydes, Australian sandalwood, juniper berry CO2, and lime. Its botanical-forward construction places emphasis on raw materials rather than elaborate blending, letting each note register on its own terms.
