The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jean Paul Gaultier's Summer 2010 flanker arrived during the Shiseido era of the house, when Beauté Prestige International held the fragrance license. The Amalfi lemon and clementine open the composition, delivering a bright citrus introduction that feels immediate and clean. These top notes do not linger in the background but announce themselves with confidence, creating an aromatic entry that speaks directly to the warmer months it was designed for. Beneath this citrus brightness, the composition shifts toward something richer: an iris-jasmine heart that reveals the house's commitment to complexity even in a seasonal flanker.
The white iris takes center stage in this flanker, and it deserves attention. In perfumery, iris presents a fascinating paradox: it can read as cold, powdery, almost metallic depending on the orris butter content. Classique Summer 2010 positions it differently, placing this complex note beside jasmine sambac, ylang-ylang, and a whisper of woody notes. The resulting floral heart feels sunlit rather than shadowed. Jasmine sambac brings its tropical lushness, ylang-ylang adds a creamy tropical quality, and the woody notes provide subtle structure without overwhelming.
The evolution
The opening hits clean: citrus with a slightly aldehydic sharpness, the kind of brightness that reads as immediate and refreshing. Then the handoff arrives. African orange flower fades, clementine recedes, and jasmine sambac takes the lead alongside lily of the valley. The ylang-ylang adds a creamy tropical quality that weaves through the composition, providing an undercurrent of richness that holds everything together. White iris asserts itself as the heart develops its full character. Powdery, slightly rooty, beautiful in its complexity. The base settles into vanilla and amber, warm and intimate. The floral heart fades slowly, with the iris lingering notably long before the drydown fully arrives. The warm vanilla and amber provide a soft conclusion, skin-close and inviting, the kind of drydown that rewards attention.
Cultural impact
Classique Summer 2010 is a limited-edition flanker from a house known for bold statements. While it hasn't achieved the widespread recognition of the original Classique or Le Male, it represents an interesting chapter in the house's seasonal offerings. The white iris heart and warm vanilla drydown create a composition that stands apart from typical summer releases. The contrast between the citrus-fresh opening and the rich, powdery warmth of the iris-vanilla foundation gives this flanker a distinctive character that merits attention from those interested in how a storied house approaches warmer-weather fragrance.
