The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Velvet Rouge arrived in 2019 as a fragrance built around something bold. Wu wanted to capture the richness of pure rose and the warmth of golden amber, a woman who commands attention without asking for it. Perfumer Frank Voelkl worked the contrast: green pepper and incense, soft florals against something with teeth. It was about the Jason Wu woman stepping into her own, scent first.
The structure here earns attention. That green-black pepper opening isn't decoration, it's the cold snap before the bloom, the beat of silence before the entrance. The heart piles rose, peony, and jasmine into something unapologetically floral, but the incense smoke threading through it keeps it from reading sweet or girlish. The amber and patchouli base doesn't disappear, it lingers close, warm, present. What makes it interesting is the restraint underneath the richness. This could have been loud. It chose to be lasting.
The evolution
Velvet Rouge opens sharp. Black pepper and green notes hit cold, almost mineral, like walking into a room where the air hasn't warmed yet. The rose arrives with presence, a deep, full rose with peony and jasmine swelling around it, incense smoke threading through the florals like a whispered secret. The drydown is where this earns its name. Amber and patchouli create a warm, slightly smoky base that stays close to the skin but lingers for hours. The incense sits in the background, not overwhelming but present like a memory of smoke. What surprises is the longevity, lasting well into the next morning with something warm and faintly floral remaining on the wrist. Worth the wait.
Cultural impact
Velvet Rouge occupies a space in the modern Oriental Floral category, warm and smoky without tipping into darkness, floral without tipping into sweetness. The sillage keeps it intimate rather than theatrical, appropriate for close conversation. Its restrained character gives it a different feel from larger house releases, more personal statement than room-filling declaration. The scent works equally well for evening occasions and professional settings, never demanding attention but always leaving an impression.
