The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Parfum Captive #3 was created by Veronique Nyberg and launched in 2017 as the third scent in J.F. Schwarzlose Berlin's Parfum Captive series. Its concept grew from an enchanted-forest story into a portrait of nature with many faces. That idea becomes strikingly physical here: fresh grapefruit cuts through a forceful family of peppers, while green facets lend the composition its vivid, outdoorsy character. Rather than evoke a forest through soft moss or damp bark, Nyberg chose contrast. Citrus provides the clearing; ginger and pepper bring the heat, texture, and movement beneath it.
The unusual part is the abundance of pepper notes working together: black, pink, red, Sichuan, and long pepper surround grapefruit with several kinds of heat. Ginger adds a cleaner kick, sharpening the fresh citrus accord with a crisp, lightly gingery lift. As the fragrance develops, grapefruit remains clear but less prominent, while the different peppers create layers of heat that range from bright and tingly to deeper and more aromatic. The contrast between sharp green freshness and warm spice gives the composition its defining tension.
The evolution
The opening arrives with citrus energy, grapefruit cutting a clean line through the sharper pepper facets. Red, black, pink, Sichuan, and long pepper build heat around it, while ginger adds bright tension rather than sweetness. As the first hour passes, the grapefruit slips toward the background and the pepper bouquet takes over, spreading through the scent in waves of tingly, aromatic warmth. The middle settles into a rounded warm spice, with ginger continuing to lend a clean lift as the pepper notes overlap. Toward the drydown, the composition becomes quieter and more cohesive, while pepper remains the most recognizable thread. The scent wears close, but its layered heat stays noticeable as the citrus gradually recedes and the spices continue to define the final impression.
Cultural impact
Parfum Captive #3 brings together green citrus and forceful pepper in a composition built around contrast. Grapefruit supplies a fresh, tart opening, while red, black, pink, Sichuan, and long pepper introduce progressively different forms of heat. Ginger sharpens the citrus with a clean, lightly tingly accent, giving the opening an energetic edge. As the fragrance develops, the grapefruit recedes and the layered pepper notes become more prominent, creating a distinctive niche fragrance experience for those drawn to compositions where freshness and spice remain in active dialogue.
The House
J.F. Schwarzlose BerlinJ.F. Schwarzlose Berlin traces its roots to a modest chemist’s shop opened in 1856 by Joachim‑Friedrich Schwarzlose, a piano maker who turned to pharmacy and colonial goods near Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt. Over more than a century the house moved from serving local patrons to supplying the German imperial court, then endured two world wars before re‑emerging in the 2010s with a contemporary line of niche fragrances. Today the brand balances historic craft with a Berlin‑centric aesthetic, offering scents such as Parfum Captive #1 (2017), Leder 6·9 (2024) and Finale (2025) while keeping production small and ingredient‑focused.
