The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Œdipe landed in 2015 from Irié, a house that grew from a flea market operation into a fragrance warehouse and creator. The brand had spent years distributing other houses' scents before putting out its own compositions, and Œdipe arrived as one of a wave of proprietary releases between 2014 and 2015, alongside Id Est, Nota Bene, and Hephaistos. Pine, pepper, resin, and leather, set against sharp mint and green herbaceous lift, built for someone who reads the room and stays quiet in it. Not an aromatic for the sake of being green or fresh, but one with weight underneath the cold edges. The opening carries a bracing chill, peppermint cutting through with an almost mentholated bite that stings the back of the throat on first spray.
What makes Œdipe distinctive is the collision of cooling and warming materials in equal measure. Black pepper and cardamom bring the heat, but peppermint and pine needles run cold through the entire structure. Frankincense pushes the composition into resinous territory, and the leather note anchors everything in a tanned, smoky finish. Patchouli and vetiver add the kind of earth that keeps the composition grounded once the mint recedes.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all cold snap. Peppermint and pine needles land bright and green, carrying the air of a high-altitude breeze with cardamom and black pepper already warming underneath. The mint holds longer than expected, sharper than a typical top note. By the thirty-minute mark, frankincense and leather step forward, shifting the composition from cool into the resinous zone. Tobacco begins to drift in around the hour mark, adding a leafy sweetness that sits well with the existing spice. Patchouli and vetiver take over the bottom register somewhere between the second and third hour, the leather note deepening instead of fading. The transition between phases carries a slow gravity, each material receding at its own pace rather than exiting all at once.
Cultural impact
Œdipe represents a specific corner of the aromatic-woody category that prizes cool, green-leaning spice over the sweeter profiles dominating mainstream releases. The composition sits alongside Id Est and Hephaistos in the brand's output, with each release carrying a recognizable classical reference and a different compositional direction. Where Hephaistos plays in smoky mineral territory and Id Est explores a different structural space, Œdipe holds onto the cooling-warming tension as its central idea, building a structure where peppermint and pine needles carry equal weight to the black pepper and leather underneath.
