Why it exists.
The beginning
Rose Narcotique arrived in 2018 from I Fiori Del Male, the Italian house whose very name borrows from Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal. The house has eight compositions in its fragrance base, and Narcotique marked one of the earliest entries in the catalog. Luca Maffei composed it, and Maffei brings a distinctive sensibility to raw materials, letting their textures and tensions speak for themselves. Here, Moroccan rose absolute sits as a heart note whose density and darkness shape the composition's center of gravity. Not the dewy, garden-variety bloom. This is something processed, layered, carrying the residue of its own making in the absolute.
What makes Rose Narcotique worth attention is the company the rose keeps. Costus and cumin in the opening lean feral, sweat-suggestive rather than clean. The cumin brings a sharp, almost bodily heat, while costus contributes its rooty, almost leathery undertone, stretching the opening away from any polite floral reading. Styrax and brown oud in the heart drag the composition toward church-candle smoke and animal hide. The styrax adds a sticky, vanillic darkness that clings to the rose, and the brown oud underneath reads more like damp earth and hide than polished wood.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are deceptive. Bergamot lifts the opening, and for a moment this could almost pass as a bright, spicy rose. Then the cumin and costus arrive, and the composition tips. Moroccan rose absolute blooms heavy in the heart, undercut by brown oud and styrax that read like resin-soaked wood burning somewhere out of sight. The base is where Rose Narcotique earns its name. Ambrinol brings golden warmth, guaiac wood adds smoky depth, patchouli grounds everything in something earthy and slightly bitter, and the animalic notes settle in close to skin. The drydown becomes the whole show, a slow accumulation of amber, wood, animal warmth, and the ghost of that rose, still narcotic, still present, still refusing to behave.

Rose Narcotique circulates among niche collectors who treat it as a curiosity and a benchmark.
