The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Collection Energetic Fougère arrived in 2021 as Hugo Boss's take on what a modern fougère can be. This is refinement applied to an established form. The brief was simple: take the aromatic freshness that defines the fougère family and make it feel effortless. Olivia Giacobetti, the nose behind the fragrance, worked with what she knows best, herbal materials and clean woody bases that don't require explanation. Angelica seed and artemisia set the tone: green, slightly bitter, unmistakably fresh. The herbal quality comes from artemisia's distinctive bite, while angelica seed adds an aromatic seediness that grounds the opening. Clean woody bases provide warmth without heaviness, letting the green notes lead. The rest follows from there.
What makes this composition work is restraint. The top notes, artemisia and angelica seed, aren't playing for drama. They're establishing a quiet authority: herbal, slightly medicinal, the kind of freshness that feels considered rather than reflexive. Geranium and rose don't arrive with fanfare; they soften the herbs, adding a powdery floral layer that prevents the opening from becoming too austere. Then the base: sandalwood and white musk. Creamy, warm, intimate. No woods clash. No musks compete. The composition trusts that clean and simple, done well, is its own kind of sophistication.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, artemisia's green bite cuts through for the first twenty minutes, sharp and herbal with a faint bitterness that wakes you up. Angelica seed adds a subtle aromatic seediness beneath it, like crushed stems. Then the transition: geranium and rose arrive around the thirty-minute mark, turning the sharpness into something softer, powdery-floral without being sweet. The drydown is where Energetic Fougère earns its keep. Sandalwood and white musk settle into the skin quietly, close, warm, almost intimate. The white musk becomes more apparent as the fragrance develops, creating a subtle intimate quality that settles close to the skin. This refined finish marks the final stage, with the scent lingering without being overpowering. It doesn't announce itself. It just stays.
Cultural impact
The Collection Energetic Fougère arrived in 2021, a period when men's fragrance was experiencing a notable shift toward cleaner, more refined compositions. The fougère genre, with its herbal-floral-woody structure, has deep roots in masculine perfumery. This modern interpretation brings contemporary sensibilities through the use of artemisia and angelica seed, materials that add a distinctive green, slightly bitter quality rarely encountered in masculine fragrances. The classic structure remains intact, while feeling distinctly current.
