The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Magdalene Vintage 2022 is a limited collaboration between House of Matriarch and British artist FKA twigs. Only 500 bottles were produced, split between 50 ml and 16 ml formats, each one numbered. Christi Meshell composed the scent as a vignette rather than a straightforward perfume, drawing on resinous, devotional materials that reference sacred oils and ancient unguents. The name points to Mary Magdalene, the biblical figure historically associated with anointing, with precious oils poured out at someone's feet. That gesture, extravagant and unrecoverable, shaped the formula's commitment to rare naturals like spikenard, rose otto, and agarwood. Vintage 2022 marks the reissue year, not the original creation date.
What's unusual here is the density of genuinely ancient materials packed into a single composition. Spikenard, one of the oldest documented perfumery ingredients, shares space with rose otto distilled by traditional methods, plus three distinct frankincense-family resins: frankincense itself, opoponax, and copal. Copaiba balm adds a softer balsamic note beneath the oud. Most modern compositions pick one or two of these traditions. Magdalene stacks them, letting the resins blur into a single devotional haze rather than keeping them legible as separate ingredients.
The evolution
Spikenard hits first, unapologetic and earthy, almost muddy in its richness. Within fifteen minutes the Gallic rose otto surfaces through that rooty darkness, petals pressed between pages of a very old book. Labdanum and myrrh arrive together in the second hour, adding a leathery, amber warmth that pushes the composition into something warmer and more human. The incense resins take longer to fully emerge. Frankincense, opoponax, and copal bloom gradually across hours two through four, turning the fragrance into something that smells less like a scent and more like a stone altar. Sandalwood and cedar arrive last, grounding the entire structure with a dry, woody foundation. On skin the fragrance holds for 4-6 hours with moderate projection. By the next morning, what's left is a faint woody-rose trace on the inner wrist, like a memory of the previous night's ritual.
Cultural impact
Magdalene Vintage 2022 exists in a specific niche: the limited-edition collaboration between an indie perfumer and a high-profile artist, constrained to 500 bottles and sold primarily through direct channels. That scarcity model places it alongside, among other perfumers, Francis Kurkdjian's Baccarat Rouge 540 in terms of collector awareness, though the two compositions share almost nothing beyond rose in their pyramids. Wearers who gravitate toward Magdalene tend to come from the natural-perfumery and indie-resin communities, people who already know what spikenard smells like and want more of it.
