The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sipario is the second collection from Teatro Olfattivo di Parma, Hilde Soliani's ode to the city's legendary opera house, Teatro Regio di Parma. Sipario, which means 'curtain' in Italian, takes its inspiration from the piña colada: white rum, pineapple juice, coconut cream. The blend opens with bright, tangy pineapple that feels sun-ripe and juicy, balanced against the warm, slightly boozy edge of white rum. Coconut cream anchors the composition, lending its rich, creamy texture that wraps around the brighter top notes like a smooth veil. Together, these elements create a fragrance that feels like a sun-drenched afternoon, tropical and inviting. Released in 2008.
What makes Sipario unusual is its restraint within abundance. Four notes, pineapple, rum, coconut, vanilla, and the perfumer lets them speak without interruption. No florals muddying the blend, no woods adding false depth. The composition leans entirely into its gourmand identity, and that single-mindedness is what makes it work. It's not a complex fragrance. It's a true one.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately: bright, tart pineapple meets warming rum and coconut cream, sweet without being cloying. There's a dextrose-candy sharpness to the top that surprises, one reviewer described it as the moment between buying Pixie Stix and applying suntan lotion. The pineapple and rum interplay creates a lively, effervescent quality that evolves across the wear. As the fragrance settles, the coconut-vanilla cream takes over, losing that candy edge for something warmer and fuller. The drydown presents coconut and vanilla, lactonic and close to the skin, with just a ghost of rum warmth underneath. The scent transitions smoothly from its initial bright burst to a softer, more intimate finish that lingers close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Sipario occupies a specific niche: the unabashedly tropical gourmand. It presents a piña colada concept translated directly into perfume form, blending white rum, pineapple, and coconut cream into a cohesive olfactory statement. The fragrance stands out for its bold, tropical sweetness without apology, offering a playful alternative to more conventional fragrance families. Its straightforward interpretation of a classic tropical drink shows confidence in its concept, delivering the expected notes in a straightforward, genuine manner rather than hedging or complicating the formula.
