The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Kim Gu is a Korean independence activist and statesman, and the fragrance takes his name as its central reference. Its composition moves from a fresh opening of lemon, eucalyptus, and peppermint into a floral center of geranium, neroli, and rose. Cedar, Indonesian patchouli, and vetiver form the base, giving the listed materials a balanced progression from citrus and green notes to florals and woods. The result is a fragrance built around a clear structure: bright citrus and herbal materials at first, a softer floral register in the middle, and a grounded woody finish. Heroes of Korea's presentation connects the release to a recognizable historical figure while keeping Kim Gu framed through the language of scent.
The composition is organized around a handoff between fresh and grounded materials. Eucalyptus and peppermint establish the green opening alongside lemon, establishing a clear aromatic start. Neroli, geranium, and rose form the floral center, adding a softer layer to the fresh notes without defining the scent solely as citrus or herbal. Cedar, Indonesian patchouli, and vetiver complete the listed structure with a woody base.
The evolution
Kim Gu opens with lemon, eucalyptus, and peppermint, then gives way to a floral center made up of geranium, neroli, and rose. The listed materials suggest a shift from a fresh green-citrus profile toward a softer floral character. Cedar, Indonesian patchouli, and vetiver define the base, adding a woody foundation to the composition. Read as a note structure rather than a documented account of how the fragrance develops on skin, Kim Gu moves from bright opening materials to a floral heart and a grounded base. The progression is marked by contrast: citrus and green notes up front, flowers through the center, and woods at the finish.
Cultural impact
Kim Gu connects the fragrance to the name of a Korean independence activist and statesman. That historical reference places the release within Heroes of Korea's focus on Korean figures and their cultural memory. The fragrance's materials offer a second point of reference: lemon, eucalyptus, and peppermint form the opening, while geranium, neroli, and rose create the floral center. Cedar, Indonesian patchouli, and vetiver complete the composition.
The House
Heroes of KoreaHeroes of Korea is a Korean niche fragrance house founded by Hani Oh in 2020. Its central idea treats perfume as a record of people, places, and episodes in Korean history. The catalogue turns historical subjects into olfactory portraits, spanning figures such as King Sejong, Kim Gu, Heo Jun, Shin Saimdang, Yi Sunsin, and Heo Nanseolheon. The first released collection includes Kim Hongdo, Sejong The Great 001, Kim Gu, Heo Jun, Heo Nanseolheon, Shin Saimdang, and Yi Sunsin, all dated to 2020. Jeongjo the Great followed in 2025. Available research does not identify the perfumers responsible for these compositions, so any account of their individual creative signatures would go beyond the documented record.
