Why it exists.
The beginning
The Veil is part of Heretic Parfum's GHOSTS collection, created exclusively for the Kunstmuseum Basel exhibition Geister, with five hundred copies produced. The scent is Douglas Little's translation of a threshold, the kind you cross when a room changes its weight. Not a haunted-house ghost, but the shimmer left behind when someone has just passed through. It reads as the scent of light filtering through sheer fabric: present, then gone, then remembered. The composition captures that suspended moment of crossing, where the air on one side carries different weight than the air on the other, and you're caught briefly in between. There's a quality of almost-not-being-there, as though the fragrance itself is passing through you rather than the other way around.
What makes The Veil structurally unusual is the central role of mushroom, specifically matsutake, alongside petrichor. Mushroom is rarely given lead billing in fragrance. It's an earthy, damp, almost mineral material, less a note you smell and more an atmosphere you walk into. The composition reads like atmosphere rather than a sequence of identifiable ingredients, a continuous wash of damp stone and wet soil that doesn't announce its individual parts.
The evolution
The opening is the coldest part of the wear. Petrichor and mushroom arrive together, reading almost mineral, like the air right after rain hits warm soil. There's a faint green-rot sweetness underneath that reads as mushroom flesh rather than anything fungal. As the wet cool recedes, the composition softens, the sharpness rounding into something more diffuse. The petrichor begins to thin, losing its immediate post-rain clarity and settling into a more abstract dampness. Mushroom gradually steps back, becoming suggestion rather than statement, a whisper of earthiness rather than a full presence. Skin accord builds steadily, and what remains is a warm, slightly sweet closeness that smells less like a place and more like a person. The dry wood emerges more clearly in the later stages, adding a quiet warmth beneath the musk.
Cultural impact
The Veil was produced exclusively for the Kunstmuseum Basel exhibition Geister, with only 500 copies made, which immediately gave it a limited, collectible status. As a museum-exclusive release tied to a specific art exhibition, it occupies unusual territory in the fragrance world, blurring the line between scent object and art piece. The GHOSTS collection extends a spectral concept through multiple fragrances created for the same exhibition context, treating scent as one medium among several for evoking presence and absence.
