The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Heretic Parfum built its identity on radical transparency, listing every natural material in every fragrance on the label. Founded in 2015 in Los Angeles, the studio crafts plant-based, non-gendered scents using only natural essential oils and absolutes blended in organic sugarcane alcohol. Holi Water, released in 2016 from the Los Angeles studio, follows this philosophy without compromise. The perfumer built the scent around a bright, energizing opening of lime and coriander, a sweet floral heart of champa flower, and a warm, grounded drydown that anchors the experience in vanilla, tonka, sandalwood, vetiver, and patchouli.
Holi Water exemplifies Heretic's commitment to radical transparency and natural materials. Every note in the composition comes from natural essential oils and absolutes, a philosophy that means the perfumer must work with materials as they exist in nature, not as they can be synthesized. The opening of lime and coriander creates a bright, crisp energy, while the heart of champa flower brings sweet, creamy floral warmth. The drydown of vanilla, tonka, sandalwood, vetiver, and patchouli grounds the fragrance in warmth and earthiness. The pairing logic here hinges on contrast: bright citrus against sweet floral against warm woods, all natural, all transparent on the label.
The evolution
The opening arrives as a bright, effervescent burst of lime and coriander, creating an immediate sense of freshness and clarity. Cedarwood adds structure almost immediately, preventing the citrus from feeling fleeting or superficial. As the first thirty minutes pass, the top notes begin their slow retreat and the heart takes its place: champa flower blooms with creamy, tropical sweetness, its full-bodied floral character filling the space the citrus leaves behind. This heart phase feels warm and slightly intoxicating, a natural sweetness that carries the fragrance into its final act. By the third hour, the drydown unfolds. Vanilla and tonka bean combine for a rich, sweet warmth, their creaminess softened by sandalwood's silky depth. Vetiver and patchouli complete the picture, adding an earthy, slightly smoky dimension that grounds the entire composition and leaves a natural, intimate finish on the skin.
Cultural impact
Since its 2016 debut, Holi Water has cultivated a modest cult following among fans of clean‑green aromatics. Reviewers often cite its vivid lime‑citrus opening as a standout moment, while the champaca heart earns praise for rarity. Though the line was eventually discontinued, the scent lives on in online forums where collectors trade bottles and reminisce about its balanced blend of bright and warm notes, positioning it as a benchmark for natural, non‑gendered compositions.
