The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Éveil du Faune, or "The Awakening of the Faun," draws its name from the mythological creature at the edge of the Greek forest, the half-animal, half-man trickster of pastoral myth. The faun stirs between worlds, and this composition moves with him. Hellenist launched the fragrance in 2026 as part of its Collection Mythologie, a series built to translate Greek narratives into scent. The house, a niche fragrance label inspired by Greece and the broader Mediterranean, has built its identity around that pull toward the ancient world, and Éveil du Faune reads as one of its more nature-bound entries. Perfumer Aliénor Massenet composed Éveil du Faune for that mythological register, choosing materials that read as vegetal, animal, and a touch profane.
The composition is unusual for pairing candied angelica and davana at the opening. Angelica carries that candied, almost liqueur sweetness, while davana contributes a wine-like, slightly fermented warmth. Together they set up something unexpectedly lush before the leathery, musky heart and the tobacco-oud base even arrive. The narcissus in the middle is what gives the composition its narcotic tilt, a floral note that behaves more like skin than like a flower. It reads as something someone has been wearing all afternoon, warmed up, softened, and drifting toward the animalic end of the spectrum.
The evolution
The opening belongs to bergamot and davana, a candied citrus that reads like the peel of something already macerating. The angelica arrives alongside them, sweet and almost liqueur-like, and together they build a top that feels both edible and slightly feral. As the composition wears on, the narcissus pushes forward through the leather and musk, and the whole thing takes on a warm, slightly dirty quality. The oud arrives underneath as a low hum, more shadow than statement, and the tobacco wraps around it. The candied quality burns off gradually, and what remains is leather, smoke, and the kind of musk that smells like warm skin on wool. The drydown settles into oud and patchouli, an earthy close that hovers near the body.
Cultural impact
Éveil du Faune reads as a composition rooted in mythological source material, with the kind of animalic lean that gives it presence rather than prettiness. Early wearers note the intensity of the smoke and the narcotic pull of the narcissus, and the fragrance behaves less like a clean floral and more like something that has been left out in the weather for a while. The narcissus in particular carries that almost feral quality, behaving more like skin than like a flower, and the leather and musk underneath it push that further into territory that feels worn rather than dressed.
