Aqua Allegoria Harvest Mandarine Basilic launched in 2023 as a limited edition in Guerlain's Aqua Allegoria Harvest series, and the concept is baked into the name. Perfumer Delphine Jelk composed this around Calabrian mandarin orange, basil, and green tea, three ingredients that share a clean, herbal-citrus register. The composition leans into that shared territory without forcing harmony, letting each note hold its own register while the others quietly support. The mandarin brings the bright, zesty top, the green tea adds a cool vegetal undertow that runs through the heart, and basil threads a green, slightly peppery edge that keeps the sweetness from tipping flat. No leather. No oud.
What makes this release interesting is the discipline of staying small. Aqua Allegoria Harvest Mandarine Basilic takes a familiar profile and tightens the focus, working with a short list of ingredients and letting each one carry weight. The mandarin here is Marzolo, harvested before full ripeness, which gives the juice a sharper, slightly green character rather than the syrupy sweetness of a fully mature fruit. Green tea adds a vegetal coolness that anchors the citrus, and basil brings the herbal snap that keeps everything from veering into fruit-cocktail territory.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all mandarin, bright, pulpy, slightly bitter, like pressing a thumb into the peel.
