The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Folha Imperial is a fragrance from Brazil built around botanical abundance: leaves, blossoms, and the herbs found in apothecary tradition. "Folha" means leaf in Portuguese. "Imperial" reaches back to when Granado first supplied the Brazilian court. The name carries weight: a fragrance that honors its botanical roots by naming them outright. Released in 2021, this one arrived quietly and has stayed that way, exactly the kind of scent that rewards the person who actually smells it rather than reading about it. The perfumer, Carmita Magalhães, constructed the fragrance with an eye toward the richness of plant life, green stems, delicate petals, and the crispness of foliage that lifts the composition above the ordinary.
The pyramid structure of Folha Imperial brings its notes together in a way that feels deliberate. The citrus top, lemon, bergamot, mandarin orange, doesn't simply evaporate to reveal what lies beneath. Mint arrives alongside the citrus and maintains its presence, threading coolness through the green heart alongside petitgrain. Peony appears in the middle, softening the botanical edges without making the fragrance feel overly delicate. The base combines moss and patchouli to create a green-earth depth that avoids reading as either masculine or feminine.
The evolution
The opening delivers citrus brightness with mint cutting through. Bergamot and mandarin orange arrive together, the mandarin adding sweetness without softness. Petitgrain brings bitter leaf and orange wood, green in a way that lemon alone could never achieve. As the fragrance develops, the mint takes prominence in the top notes while citrus recedes to background warmth. Peony appears more noticeably, threading faint floral sweetness through the green. The heart of the fragrance lasts the longest, with petitgrain and mint holding the composition together while peony softens the edges. This botanical garden character, green and alive, defines the middle stage. The drydown shifts to moss, which provides earthy depth without darkness. Patchouli adds weight underneath. Musk stays close to the skin, intimate and present even hours later.
Cultural impact
Granado's Folha Imperial draws on Brazilian fragrance traditions with its citrus-forward profile and botanical heart. The combination of citrus, mint, and green notes reflects an approach to perfumery that prioritizes freshness and naturalism. The fragrance maintains relevance through its straightforward composition, avoiding overly complex layering in favor of clear, identifiable notes that communicate their botanical origins. This approach connects contemporary wearers to older fragrance values without requiring historical knowledge to appreciate the scent.
