The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mark Buxton designed My Givenchy Dream. Released in 2008, the fragrance arrives with a particular character, bright and approachable from the start. The name evokes something familiar, a sensation already known rather than manufactured. This eau de parfum opens with crisp clementine and tart blackcurrant, creating an immediate fruity brightness that feels inviting rather than aggressive. The heart introduces white florals, jasmine, rose, and lily of the valley, that keep the composition grounded and wearable. Buxton focused on creating a scent for regular wear, for moments when you want something pleasant without complication. Simple preference, no backstory required.
The combination of clementine and blackcurrant at the opening sets this apart from the average fruity-floral. Blackcurrant carries a tartness that most berry notes lack, dark, slightly medicinal, and uncommon enough to feel distinctive rather than derivative. The dominant impression remains bright and forward. The heart leans into white florals at their most approachable: jasmine rounded by lily of the valley, with rose providing just enough warmth to prevent sterility. Together these florals create a creamy, slightly sweet middle ground that keeps the fragrance from feeling too austere.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, tart clementine arrives first, followed immediately by blackcurrant's dark tartness. The fruit opens up the composition, creating space for what follows. Jasmine and rose emerge next, softened by lily of the valley's green freshness. The transition is smooth, almost gentle, as the brighter top notes recede and the floral heart takes center stage. The drydown brings sandalwood's creamy warmth alongside patchouli's earthy depth, with amber adding a touch of sweetness that keeps everything grounded. As the hours pass, the sillage drops gradually. It becomes a skin scent, present if someone gets close, less noticeable from across the room. What lingers at the end is a faint trace of sandalwood and patchouli, settling into the warmth of your skin.
Cultural impact
A fruity-floral with comfortable projection, My Givenchy Dream offers something distinct. The blackcurrant note sets it apart from more generic contemporaries, reading as distinctive without being challenging. The 2008 launch placed it squarely in the era of bright, fruity florals, but its composition, with that tart, slightly medicinal blackcurrant leading the top and a clean, approachable drydown, keeps it from feeling generic. The sandalwood and patchouli base provides warmth without heaviness, making the fragrance versatile enough for different occasions.
