The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Untold arrived in 2024 from Ghawali, the fragrance house founded by perfumer Hamid Merati-Kashani. He built this one around a single question: what happens when the opening isn't the point? The eucalyptus-bergamot entry is clean and immediate, that part works on its own. But the real composition starts after. Praline and caramel arrive mid-development, sliding into the cool opening like an unexpected character entering a scene. By the time the amber-patchouli base settles, you've experienced something that doesn't smell like its start. Untold is named for that hidden layer, the part of any story that changes everything that came before. The eucalyptus provides a sharp, herbal lift that cuts through the air while bergamot and orange add brightness and dimension to the top.
The note structure here is unusual. Eucalyptus is rarely used as a top-note anchor in this type of composition, but Merati-Kashani paired it with Calabrian bergamot and orange, giving the cool top a citrus lift that prevents it from feeling flat. Then the praline and caramel enter. These are gourmand notes in a composition that doesn't read as gourmand, the sweetness is there, but it's threaded through cedarwood and held down by patchouli and cypriol. The effect is a fragrance that keeps shifting register. Not schizophrenic, just refusing to stay in one place long enough to be pinned down.
The evolution
The opening hits with eucalyptus cutting through, a clean and immediate presence that establishes the fragrance's character right away. Bergamot and orange lift it, a citrus sparkle that gives the top layer real presence and keeps it from feeling heavy. This first act lasts for a reasonable period before the sweetness arrives. Praline and caramel slide in, warm and edible, threading through the cool like someone new entering the room. The Atlas cedar keeps it grounded, woodsy, slightly dry, preventing the sweetness from going soft. This heart phase is where Untold earns its reputation. It's not what you expected from the opening. The base takes over as the fragrance develops: amber and patchouli anchoring everything into something deeper and more resinous. Cypriol and gurjan balsam add an earthy, slightly smoky quality that adds complexity and depth.
Cultural impact
Ghawali's 2024 releases show a house willing to experiment with narrative-driven concepts. Untold demonstrates range, taking oriental conventions and subverting them with unexpected note combinations. The eucalyptus-praline contrast has drawn attention as an unusual pairing, with wearers noting it as something different from standard releases. The fragrance has caught the interest of those who appreciate compositions that don't follow predictable paths, offering a distinctive alternative to more conventional oriental-woody fragrances.
