The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Eucris appeared in 1912 as Geo. F. Trumper's statement on what a gentleman's fragrance should be, present without demanding attention, composed without being forgettable. The original EDT built a following among men who preferred their scent to arrive quietly and stay that way. When the house reformulated for the modern market in 2017, the EDP version arrived with more substance, more staying power, but the same guiding principle: refinement that doesn't require announcement. Blackcurrant carried forward from the original, its tart, slightly bitter character intact, a deliberate choice to anchor the new concentration to what came before.
The blackcurrant here isn't the synthetic candy note found in countless mass-market fragrances. It's the real fruit, tart, almost medicinal, with a slight bitterness that grounds the composition. That single choice shapes everything: it keeps the opening from reading sweet, it gives the aromatic herbs something to work against, and it prevents the white florals from tipping into powdery cliché. Clove and jasmine bring warmth, but not sweetness, the herbs (marjoram, thyme) keep the heart savory rather than soft. By drydown, moss dominates the base, and it's moss in the classical chypre sense, earthy, structured, not the green fresh-cut lawn variety.
The evolution
The opening announces blackcurrant's tartness immediately, a sharp, fruity bite that doesn't apologize for itself. Coriander and cumin hover at the edges, adding a savory counterpoint that curious noses will notice before the average wearer. Lemon keeps the top bright for fifteen minutes, maybe twenty, before the florals arrive: lily of the valley, jasmine, clove. The transition isn't dramatic, more of a slow handoff than a hard pivot. The herbs do the heavy lifting here, keeping the white florals from reading too sweet. By the third hour, the base takes over. Moss and sandalwood dominate the drydown, with amber, musk, and patchouli adding warmth that stays close to the skin. The blackcurrant doesn't disappear, it lingers as a ghost note, a faint tartness that reminds you this isn't a standard woody. Lasts eight to ten hours on most skin, projects moderately for the first two hours, then becomes an intimate close-skin experience for the remaining hours.
Cultural impact
Eucris has accumulated a following among those who prefer their fragrance to stay close and last long. The 2017 EDP version added substance to the original formula, more longevity, more presence, while maintaining the house's characteristic restraint. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves. Moderate sillage means it won't fill a space, but it will outlast a full workday. The blackcurrant note earns particular mention, unusual in men's fragrances, where it typically appears in candied or synthetic form. Here, it reads as the actual fruit, tart and slightly bitter, anchoring a composition that rewards attention.
