The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bukhara is a city in Uzbekistan on the ancient Silk Road, a crossroads of empires, architects, and artisans for over a millennium. Gallivant founder Nick Steward visited and found it transformative. He called it the jewel in the crown, a magical place. The fragrance captures that essence, a sense of ancient history meeting contemporary craft. Perfumer Ralf Schwieger composed the scent, working with orris as a central element that anchors the composition. The overall effect is one of warm spices, powdery iris, and a sense of timeless beauty that speaks to the city's rich heritage as a meeting point of cultures and peoples.
Orris is one of perfumery's most expensive and labour-intensive materials, requiring considerable time and care to develop its aromatic compounds. Gallivant didn't hide it here. The orris lends a powdery, slightly violet quality that anchors the composition, while warm spices push through to create a sense of depth and richness. The apricot adds a fruitiness that prevents the composition from feeling austere, which is exactly what such a fragrance needs, grandeur with a human pulse.
The evolution
The opening is all caraway and coriander over cool bergamot. The pear arrives quietly, almost imperceptibly, softening the edges. Then the iris and jasmine emerge together, powdery florals warmed by clove, and the composition shifts from aromatic to something more intimate. The base takes its time arriving. Saffron anchors the drydown, with benzoin and amber providing warmth that stays close to skin. By hour six, you're left with soft woods and musk. On fabric, it lingers for days.
Cultural impact
Bukhara occupies a distinctive space in Gallivant's city collection, distinguished by its rich, powdery character. The fragrance focuses on orris as a dominant note, placing it alongside costlier niche compositions that share this ingredient. Gallivant's accessible pricing makes this approach more widely available. The overall impression is one of quiet confidence, a fragrance that speaks without needing to shout.
