The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jono Bornstein built Smuggler's Notch around a sense of passage. The 2023 release uses a dual-extraction process, blending raw materials before and after extraction, a technique that lets the fragrance hold contradictions in the same breath: fresh and dark, green and sweet, local and ancient. The scent opens with an immediate crispness, like cold air moving through evergreen branches, followed by an unexpected warmth that builds as the materials settle into skin. Twenty-five bottles were made. It's been discontinued.
What makes this work is the layered extraction. Blending materials pre- and post-extraction means the same ingredient can read differently depending on where it sits in the pyramid. Oak at the top smells like cold air over a forest floor. Oak in the base smells like heartwood and smoke. Pre-extraction blending is rare, it requires the perfumer to think in layers before the materials are even combined. The process involves building Smuggler's Notch from raw material inward.
The evolution
The opening hits cold. Spruce and fir arrive simultaneously, cutting through whatever else is in the room. Barley malt sits underneath, sweet, grainy, brief. Within twenty minutes the green lifts. Tobacco moves in, but it doesn't overwhelm. Apple and blackcurrant follow, adding a fruity softness that keeps the tobacco honest. The heart holds for four to five hours, shifting from spice to fruit to floral as orris and hay take turns leading. The base features dark musks, oud, and pine tar, materials that don't evaporate quickly. They settle into skin and fabric, creating a drydown that on a wool coat reads as maple syrup and smoke. The following day, a faint sweetness lingers on the wrist.
Cultural impact
With only 25 bottles produced and a discontinued status, Smuggler's Notch has become a collector's piece in indie perfumery. Wearers who found it describe it as the fragrance they reach for when they want something with real character, autumnal, complex, built to last. It's not a safe blind buy or a crowd-pleaser. It's the fragrance for someone who already knows what they like.
