    Master Perfumer

    Jono Bornstein

Jono Bornstein grew up in New Rochelle, New York, just outside New York City. He trained in formal perfumery, studying the classics of modern perfumery note by note alongside chemistry, marketing, and law. The curriculum covered both fine fragrances and functional perfumery for products like shampoos and candles. After working in collaborative studio settings where briefs often steered toward safe, commercially proven directions, Bornstein moved into independent work. The shift from sharing creative decisions with a team to working alone was difficult for him; he genuinely enjoys the collaborative process. He launched his own house to have full control over his creative output, navigating the practical and logistical challenges of starting a fragrance brand from scratch. Parfumo credits him with 31 perfumes, and his work centers on Americana folk traditions rather than the oud and musky floral trends dominating contemporary niche perfumery.

    How Jono composes

Bornstein works with North American aromatics and employs unconventional techniques like fermentation alongside hand-made absolutes. He combines these natural approaches with classic-inspired artificial materials, notably nitro-musks. Rather than the oud and musk-floral development that dominates niche perfumery, he builds compositions around conifer, juniper, and other wild ingredients. His work has an outdoorsy, natural character that draws from folk tradition while respecting classical perfumery structure.

    Philosophy

    What drives Jono

Bornstein rejects the risk-averse approach of commercial fragrance houses that prefer to replicate proven winners rather than pioneer new directions. He looks to folk music, art, and culture for inspiration, creating perfumes for people who spend time outdoors surrounded by nature. He bends and breaks the standard rules of perfumery to pursue what he considers the best compositions possible, without being constrained by market trends or ingredient fashions.
