    Master Perfumer

    Rajesh Balkrishnan

Rajesh Balkrishnan wears two hats with equal conviction: a tenured professor of public health and a self‑taught natural perfumer. He earned a Ph.D. in pharmacology, then spent more than two decades dissecting molecules for cancer research at the University of Virginia. While lecturing, he turned to fragrance as a laboratory for curiosity, mixing essential oils in his kitchen to test how scent can echo the precision of his scientific work. In 2016 he released his first collaborative scent, Keman, followed by Sayat Nova, both of which earned praise for their raw botanical character. The partnership with Byermia on Aghora secured a nomination for an Art and Olfaction award, marking his first public recognition in the niche market. Today he balances grant proposals with scent sketches, inviting fellow scientists and artists to taste his chemistry.

    How Rajesh composes

Rajesh favors natural extracts harvested from remote farms, especially resins, woods, and rare herbs. He extracts essential oils using cold‑press or steam methods, then blends them in small glass vials to preserve integrity. His signatures include smoky agarwood, bright citrus peel, and earthy vetiver, often layered with a whisper of spice such as Sichuan pepper. He prefers minimalist compositions that reveal themselves over time, allowing the top, heart, and base to evolve without artificial accelerants.

    Philosophy

    What drives Rajesh

Rajesh approaches perfume as a dialogue between molecule and memory. He believes that a single atom can trigger a feeling as clearly as a spoken word. His scientific training forces him to trace each ingredient back to its source, then test its impact on the skin for hours. He avoids gimmicks, letting the raw material speak. When a note feels too familiar, he twists its concentration or pairs it with an unexpected counterpoint. This disciplined curiosity drives every bottle he co‑creates.
