The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Florian Pontier built a reputation on fragrances that read as art objects, limited editions, sculptural bottles, a blend of French precision and unexpected material pairings. Krokos, released in 2025, carries that ethos forward with a name drawn from the Greek word for saffron, a tribute to the prized crimson threads harvested in the Kozani region of northern Greece. Perfumer Karine Vinchon-Speh approached the brief with the goal of translating that ancient heritage into a modern olfactory statement, pairing saffron not with expected counterparts but with the sharp, almost citrus-like bite of pink pepper to create an opening that feels both familiar and unexpectedly electric.
Vinchon-Speh treats each note not as a standalone element but as a participant in a larger conversation. The choice to open with pink pepper alongside saffron speaks to a philosophy of contrast, the bright, almost cool spice of pepper against saffron's warm, granular depth. The leather and passion fruit in the heart represent a similar tension: leather's masculine, tactile character against passion fruit's tropical exuberance. Iris bridges them, its powdery floral nature softening the transition. In the drydown, the triple wood of oud, sandalwood, and patchouli provides a stable foundation that lets the earlier notes fade gracefully rather than vanish abruptly.
The evolution
The journey begins with pink pepper and saffron arriving together, the pepper offering an immediate sparkle that cuts through the saffron's deep, resinous warmth. Within the first hour, leather surfaces, its soft texture absorbing the lingering sweetness of passion fruit that appears as the top notes recede. Iris slips in quietly, providing a powdery floral counterweight to the leather's weight. By the third hour, the composition settles into its base: oud introduces a smoky, almost medicinal depth; sandalwood follows with creamy warmth; patchouli grounds the entire structure with its characteristic earth and a hint of bitterness. The progression feels deliberate, each stage building naturally from the one before.
Cultural impact
Part of the Flo'w collection unveiled at Esxence 2025, Krokos quickly became a talking point among niche collectors for its daring saffron‑leather core. Its East‑West contrast sparked debates on social media, with enthusiasts praising the bold spice‑oud marriage while others noted its strong projection. The fragrance has been highlighted in several 2025 niche‑perfume round‑ups as a standout example of modern oriental experimentation.
