The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Evelyne Boulanger designed Zodiac Aqua to capture something rarely attempted in modern perfumery: the scent of stillness itself. Where most aquatics reach for ocean drama or tropical heat, this composition turns inward, toward a pond, a forest floor, the moment before a day fully begins. Boulanger has worked across floral, oriental, and woody compositions, but Zodiac Aqua marks a quieter register, a study in restraint. The brief, as Faberlic framed it, was simple: translate forest dew into something wearable. Not literal. Not a nature recording. Something that feels like the memory of that smell.
The forest dew accord is the work's quiet obsession. Dew is difficult to capture in fragrance, it's not a note so much as a condition, the absence of harshness combined with the presence of green. Boulanger approaches it by layering water lily against dew drop and bulrush, creating a cool, slightly grounded opening that reads as morning freshness without the citrus sharpness typical of aquatic fragrances. The heart of blue lilies and bellflower softens the composition further, while the base of grape leaves, fern, and moss introduces an earthy depth that most aquatics skip entirely. It's the difference between a photograph of water and the smell of water.
The evolution
The opening arrives soft and dewy, water lily floating on a still surface, dew drop catching the first light. The bulrush underneath keeps it grounded, a slight green breath that prevents any soapy flatness. For the first hour, the fragrance stays cool and clear, a quiet announcement. Then the blue lilies begin to surface, gentler than a standard floral heart, almost dissolving into the opening rather than replacing it. Bellflower adds a faint sweetness without pushing into gourmand territory. By the third hour, the florals thin and the base takes over, grape leaves bringing a tart, green finish, moss settling close to skin, fern and musk adding warmth that lingers for hours after the florals have gone.
Cultural impact
Zodiac Aqua arrived in 2025 as part of Faberlic's broader strategy to elevate its fragrance portfolio beyond mass-market expectations. The Russian beauty market has seen increasing investment in complex, designer-quality scents, and Zodiac Aqua represents this shift toward accessibility without sacrificing artistry. Its aquatic-floral structure reflects a global trend toward fresh, clean fragrance profiles while incorporating the earthy moss and musk base that Russian consumers traditionally favor. The collaboration with perfumer Evelyne Boulanger signals a new era for the brand, where international expertise meets local market preferences.
