The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Renata Secret arrived in 2019 as the second Faberlic fragrance created in collaboration with Russian actress Renata Litvinova. The name suggests something personal and guarded, an inner world the wearer carries rather than announces. Massenet built the composition around fig in its green, leafy form, a note that reads differently depending on who you ask. In its opening, the fig accord feels bright and almost crunchy, like a fresh-cut stem with a faint milky undertone that emerges as the green notes warm on the skin. The fragrance moves through stages that feel organic rather than linear, the fig transitioning from crisp vegetal freshness into something rounder and more diffuse as the composition settles.
What makes Renata Secret structurally interesting is the fig-to-water-lily pairing. Fig leaf brings green, slightly milky freshness, the smell of stems cut at dawn. Water lily adds an aquatic quality that floats above it, almost dew-like. Together they create a green-floral middle that feels damp and garden-quiet rather than loud or synthetic. The black pepper in the top is a deliberate counterweight: a small spice that keeps the freshness from becoming inert. It's the kind of architectural choice that separates a thoughtful perfume from a note list.
The evolution
The opening hits crisp, bergamot and citron bright, with black pepper arriving just behind to prick the air. Within minutes the bergamot fades and fig leaf takes command. That's the shift: from citrus clarity to green dampness, like walking into a garden after rain. As the fig leaf settles, it reveals a subtle creaminess beneath the green, almost like the inner flesh of the fruit rather than just the stem and leaves. Water lily and freesia arrive next, softening the fig's edges into something more floral, more forgiving, though the water lily contributes an aquatic freshness that keeps the florals from becoming too sweet. The drydown doesn't so much arrive as settle, vetiver and ambergris working together to create a close, slightly warm presence that stays within arm's reach for hours.
Cultural impact
Renata Secret occupies an interesting position: a fig-forward fragrance that takes a direction usually found in niche compositions. One enthusiast reviewer explicitly called it a 'pop-budget version of a very expensive theme,' comparing it to Diptyque and Kilian. The fig and green fig direction aligns with the broader fig trend in contemporary perfumery, where the note has become a signature of sophisticated, garden-forward compositions. Massenet's execution pairs fig leaf with water lily for an aquatic-green effect that distinguishes it from more straightforward fig interpretations.
