The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ex Nihilo, established in Paris in 2013, challenged convention by giving perfumers complete creative freedom, and Oud Vendome stands as the house's opening declaration. Olivier Pescheux was tasked with translating Place Vendome's marble colonnades and gilded jewelry windows into liquid form, a brief that demanded both opulence and precision. Rather than reaching for obvious oriental ingredients, Pescheux selected French-sourced agarwood as his foundation, seeking to honor the square's heritage while reimagining what luxury scent could mean in the modern era. The fragrance was conceived during Ex Nihilo's formative years as a statement of intent, signaling that the house would not simply replicate tradition but would interrogate it.
The note selection reflects Pescheux's philosophy of using ingredients that serve the narrative rather than simply impressing. Saffron and ginger provide immediate impact, but they also function as bridge elements that connect the bright opening to the deeper base. Cedarwood and galbanum create a heart that feels distinctly Parisian in its restraint, while frankincense, musk, and oud form a base that honors traditional perfumery without being beholden to it. The pairing of oud with frankincense creates a resonance that feels both ancient and contemporary, a fitting combination for a fragrance named after one of Paris's most storied locations.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a vivid saffron note, its metallic sweetness immediately capturing attention before cinnamon and ginger arrive to amplify the warmth. This spicy trio creates an opening that feels both luxurious and energetic, a deliberate choice to evoke the sensory overload of the Place Vendome boutiques. The heart unfolds with cedarwood, its dry, slightly pencil-like character replacing the sweetness of the opening with something more austere and architectural. Galbanum introduces a green, slightly bitter dimension that grounds the composition, preventing the wood from feeling sterile. As the fragrance moves into its base, frankincense takes over, its smoky resinous quality adding spiritual depth that nods to the square's historical gravitas. Musk provides an intimate warmth, while oud anchors everything with its characteristic deep, complex wood character that ensures the scent lingers on skin for hours.
Cultural impact
Since its 2014 debut, Oud Vendôme has become a staple for those who crave a Paris‑centric oud, often cited in niche forums as the bridge between classic Middle‑Eastern oud and contemporary Western spice, earning a place beside Cartier’s Oud Radieux and Dior’s Oud Iris in modern luxury circles.
