The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jessi Park designed Panne & Pear after a walk through an orchard shortly after losing her sister. The pear and apple, heavy on the branch, became a way to hold a moment made tangible, summer's abundance alongside the weight of memory. The name itself is a quiet wordplay: 'panne' evokes warm bread, the kind that fills a kitchen with comfort. Here, it softens into the fruit instead. What could have been a straightforward fruity-floral became something more personal: brightness held by warmth, ripeness held by cream.
The note structure holds contradictions worth sitting with. Chamomile is herbal, slightly bitter, not a typical companion for whipped cream. Violet is powdery, almost medicinal against melon. These tensions are intentional. They keep the composition from being too easy, too obvious. The ambroxan and ambrettolide in the base provide a clean, skin-warm finish that extends wear without projection. What sounds like a simple fruity-floral reveals itself, on closer inspection, as something with more depth.
The evolution
The opening burst of pear and blackcurrant arrives crisp and immediate. Within minutes, violet and apple emerge, the initial sharpness rounds into something softer, more feminine. The heart holds for two to three hours, a slow reveal of chamomile's herbal calm against the melon and whipped cream. Then the hand-off: sandalwood and vanilla take over, close and warm. The drydown lasts 6-8 hours on most skin types. It's skin-close, intimate, the kind of wear that someone standing beside you might notice before you do. Sometimes the sandalwood lingers in a collar or a scarf the next morning.
Cultural impact
Panne & Pear occupies the space between mass-market fruity-florals and the higher-ceiling of niche perfumery. It's the kind of composition that appeals to someone who wants more artistry without the commitment of avant-garde work. The chamomile note is the differentiator, unusual enough to spark conversation, approachable enough to wear casually. For a 2024 release in a crowded market, that balance is its strength.
