The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Elie Saab, founded in Lebanon in 1982, has consistently translated the language of haute couture into olfactory form. The house's Le Parfum line, active since 2011, captures the refined aesthetic and material integrity of Saab's gowns and evening wear. For the Feuilles d'Or edition released in October 2017, Francis Kurkdjian was tasked with a specific challenge: to capture the luminous sparkle of gold-threaded evening dresses and jeweled gowns in liquid form. The shimmering gold motifs adorning the limited edition bottle were not merely decorative but served as visual shorthand for the warmth and radiance the scent itself would deliver.
The note structure reveals a clear intention: start with light, build to opulence, settle into warmth. Orange blossom and bergamot are chosen for their ability to feel simultaneously fresh and luxurious, qualities that align with the shimmering bottle design. Ylang-ylang and jasmine anchor the heart precisely because they are classic in fragrance yet demand respect for their power. The drydown's combination of patchouli, white honey, and amberwood creates what Kurkdjian might describe as a golden warmth, an olfactory echo of the gilded evening wear that inspired the collection. Cedarwood and white musk ensure the sweetness never becomes cloying, keeping the composition refined and enduring.
The evolution
The opening act is a study in controlled brilliance. Bergamot and orange blossom arrive together, the citrus brightness of bergamot tempering the rich floral sweetness of orange blossom to create something that sparkles without sharpness. This bright opening feels like light catching gilded fabric. As the fragrance evolves, ylang-ylang and jasmine emerge as the heart, their combined effect far more opulent than either note alone. The ylang-ylang brings tropical creaminess while jasmine adds depth and a subtle animalic warmth. By the time the base arrives, the composition has transformed completely. Patchouli and amberwood anchor the fragrance with earthy warmth, cedarwood contributes dry, elegant woodiness, and white honey provides a golden sweetness that feels like the natural conclusion to a journey from light to gold. White musk and rose complete the picture with clean clarity and a lingering floral memory.
Cultural impact
The limited‑edition Feuilles d'Or bottle, with its gold‑embossed floral motif, quickly became a coveted piece among collectors, often displayed as a decorative object as much as a perfume. Wearers note its ability to evoke the glamour of Elie Saab’s runway shows, making it a go‑to for special evenings. Its exclusive release reinforces the brand’s reputation for marrying couture aesthetics with olfactory artistry, cementing its place in the niche luxury market.
