The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dzintars released Koķete 2 in 2001, adding a second chapter to a fragrance line that began with the original Koķete in 1978. The 2001 edition shifted the composition toward a greener, more aquatic register than its predecessor, trading the violet and aldehydes of the original for water lily and ozonic notes that felt modern without discarding the house's commitment to accessible, wearable perfumery. The opening is soft and translucent, with water lily and peach arriving together in a clean, almost cool impression. Beneath this, lily of the valley adds a green flicker that keeps things grounded rather than delicate. As the scent develops, the ozonic quality becomes more pronounced, giving the fragrance a sense of airy space.
The heart of Koķete 2 lives in its unusual melon-hyacinth pairing. Melon is sweet, watery, almost anonymous. Hyacinth is green, sharp, verging on animalic. Together they create a tension, cool fruit against lush floral, that the ozonic notes then flatten into something cohesive. It's the kind of combination that sounds strange on paper but smells inevitable. The iris in the base is the quiet workhorse here, providing a powdery softness that prevents the green notes from ever becoming too sharp. Peach keeps everything tender. This isn't a fragrance that argues. It negotiates.
The evolution
The opening hits clean: water lily and peach together feel almost translucent, like morning light through glass. Within twenty minutes the melon surfaces, not ripe, not unripe, just present, softening the green edge of the hyacinth as it climbs. The rose isn't obvious. It's structural, holding the middle together while the hyacinth does the talking. By hour three, the amber begins its slow work, warming everything without sweetness. Iris takes over in the final act, settling into skin-close powder that most people around you won't notice, but you'll still catch it on your wrist hours later. The ozonic quality never fully disappears. It threads through the drydown like a memory of rain.
Cultural impact
Koķete 2 represents a particular moment in the house's evolution, a 2001 release that reflects the shift toward aquatic-fresh trends that characterized the early 2000s. Its green-floral-aquatic character maintains a gentle quality throughout its development, with a restraint that sets it apart from more assertive Western releases of the same period. The composition reads as soft and intimate, with notes that stay close to the skin rather than projecting outward. Water lily and ozonic elements create a clean, airy impression, while lily of the valley and subtle green notes add depth without introducing heat or heaviness.
